    Gosh, I just have to share this: you speak as if you read my mind and soul😉😏... I am an experienced teacher, used to deal with really challenging situations - but having the same with my own child it's a COMPLETELY different story! At first I was deeply...disapponited with myself, but then realized it's not that easy in such case. Thank you 🌷

    I encourage the kids to participate in the chores, but they are not interested. They will rather give up on the game and together time then do something useful. If they refuse to help out, what should be the consequence.

    thanks so much for all of this, and for sharing this conversation! i do think it’s important to consider the findings around blue light, how it affects hormone and addiction-leaning behaviors and brain chemistry, as well as its effects on circadian rhythm - and how this can affect any human overall. i wonder how this can tie into the adhd conversation 🤔

    This is just in time. Day before yesterday my son got so oppositional, that I felt I was triggered almost constantly. Intuitively I decoded to stop reacting to this behavior with emotion. So yesterday was even worse. Looks like I was doing the right thing and just need to keep it up.

    Thank you so much. The daily expectations chart has changed our day completely. Parent training and taking accountability for our own behaviour, rather than treating this as the child's problem is the ONLY way we saw real change. Your content has really made a huge difference! I would seriously recommend Gabor Mate's book Scattered Minds to EVERY parent who really wants to help their child. No therapy and no medicine and a better family life for all. Do it for you.❤

    My sons spend one week alternately with me and their Dad. They get a lot of screen time at their Dad's home for the week. And when they come home to me, they have to check in their cell phones and switches in my room. There are strict rules on screen time in my home because I do see the addictive behavior it has on them. Because they go from a home with hours of screen time to my home with strict screen time. The first day or so at my home is a struggle and it does seem like they are going through withdrawal. I'm a critical care nurse and my oldest son has been diagnosed with ADHD since he was in 1st grade. We live in a world where screen time is prevalent. My sons have to earn their screen time at my home and that time is limited. I get a lot of push back from them but have stood my ground. I found that allowing their earned screen time at the end of the day when homework and chores are done is better than allowing them screen time after they get home from school. They wake up on the weekends wanting screen time the first thing in the morning. Chores and homework, and respectful behvior must be completed before screen time is allowed. Dad's home is completely the opposite where there are TVs and a gaming computer in their bedrooms. Our parenting styles are completely the opposite. I have recently discovered Ryan's ADHD Dude videos and now Michael and Ryan's Podcast videos and I greatly appreciate the information!!! My currently struggle is my Freshman son has refused to take his Vyvanse and his grades in school are currently low Cs. He's failed a number of quizzes/ tests and not turning in all work. His reason for not taking medication is he wants to grow taller and stronger and finds the medication curtails his appetitie. Dad has a more permissive parenting style will allows our son to make his own decision on whether or not to take the medication even though our son's pediatrician recommends it. The struggle is so real. I will definitely use your information as a guide and have shared it with their father.

    Omg i just saw someone say in a charger mom group that her child has nonverbal learning disorder. Is that an actual disorder?

    • @ADHDDude
      @ADHDDude 4 дня назад

      It is not a formally recognized diagnosis, but unlike "PDA", it is based on language processing, not a description of behaviors. It is very hard to diagnose, but I definitely think there's legitimacy to it as I've seen great consistencies amongst learning profiles with it.

    This is GOLD! Thank you for going beyond the typical "Just don't respond" or "Ignore the behavior" and talking about how once you start that, the child will escalate the bad behavior before you will make any progress, and this will be triggering as the parent. No one talks about this part, and parents feel defeated when they do the "don't engage, don't argue" and the child pulls out ALL THE STOPS! And then the parent feels even more defeated when their child triggers them and they react. Thanks for reminding us parents we are human too, and that's okay, but here's what to expect so keep at it. For some of us, it can take YEARS to make real progress, but that's still better than no progress! Well worth the effort!

    Honestly as a mom who had a child in her early teen years, my kid is now 10. She has been diagnosed with ADHD and it does seem far a punishment she doesn’t care. My mom and sister help raise her and we all talk to her and everything. Take things away from her and she still doesn’t seem to care. I need to look into things that’ll get her more active because it seems like she’s so focused on being disobedient. I’m currently in tears rn because I just don’t know what to do. It seems she wants to follow the wrong path every time. Will definitely try taking this approach.

    Would your program be suitable for a 3 year old ? We just ended OT but continue to need help. When my daughter doesn’t get her way and I try to ignore her negative behavior and walk away to do something else, she cries so hard she holds her breath and passes out, it’s extremely scary.

    I have tried this. I have tried offering $$ per task and also tokens that will tally up to weekly allowance or special other things. I have even tried taking away things. He doesn't care and will not do anything to help. I have begged and pleaded and tried to explain what and why i am asking for these tasks and tried to do everything. So, none of that is working at all. He's a perfect angel at school, but at home, I am just his safe place and am completely the pushover at this point. Nothing gets done unless I am a complete ahole about it and yell and am on his butt till it's done. I 💯 hate it and am so overwhelmed and exhausted doing this, but it seems to be the only thing that works sadly, or I just do it myself.

    But what do you do when the lack of impulse control ends up putting others at risk. For example: my 5 year old will get totally hyper and crash through the house, spinning not paying attention to where his siblings are and hurting them by knocking them over or smacking them with his flailing arms.

    Just to append this vid: I was this child he's talking about. At times, my parents attempted to get me "involved" by assigning chores. However, they didn't do it gracefully; instead of easing into something new, they waited until they were frustrated and then assigned a "grand " task with high expectations... this never went well and nearly always ended with me being punished. So, the parent must remain patient and exhibit diligence towards implementing a new schema, and set an example for expectations.
